第一乐章，奏鸣曲式。乐队引子以弦乐组的一个温柔抚爱的主部主题开始。这首协奏曲的一大特点是，所有的单簧管独奏段都在一个最能表现这种乐器给人美感的音色力度和音高水平上开始。独奏单簧管接过主部主题时，效果甚至比乐章开始时更柔美。亲切的室内乐织体是由于先把伴奏只限于小提琴而获得的，后来才加上中提琴，最后允许低音弦乐器参加时，只是为了加几笔轻淡的和声支托。第二主题为E大调，单簧管与弦乐密切配合，独奏单簧管的涟漪般的音阶和琶音结束主部主题的陈述，弦乐器接着插入第一主题的旋律完整的结束了呈示部。紧接着，听到单簧管用忧郁的小调式吹出一个对比旋律，开始了发展部。这些惆怅的笔触，即使在活泼的第一和第三乐章中最阳光灿烂的时刻，也总是挥之不去。回转联动后，乐曲很快又回到再现部。
