HQ第2首，《悲伤的小鸟》。拉威尔说这首作品他希望唤起的情景是“在一个炎热的夏天里，可怜的小鸟迷失在黑暗寂静的森林。”两个重复音主题动机和装饰音风格回转音型描写了两种不同的鸟叫声。其余神秘的伴奏声部仿佛在模仿森林中寂静却神秘迷离的气氛。突然两下尖锐的鸟叫声仿佛惊醒了一颗大树上栖息的鸟群，乐曲突然由双手交替颤抖和弦奏出激动人心的高潮，模仿惊慌失措的鸟群突然飞起，散落去各个角落。乐曲再次堕入寂静中，开头孤单小鸟的叫声再次出现。尾声一段自由华彩写作般的闪烁段落由低至高至低，由慢至快至慢(犹如在漫无目的地寻找)，最后逐渐消失在一段悲伤的结尾，隐约听到小鸟的幽幽的叫声已经飞到远处。
