此曲是拉威尔是受了李斯特的《埃斯特别墅的喷泉》的影响，以同样的华丽钢琴炫技色彩写下的作品。可是，E大调的《水之嬉戏》所具有的创新钢琴技巧及音响效果是史无前例的，他运用不断重复及重叠的固定音型，配上近乎双调性和声的重叠和弦色彩(C大调和声与升F大调和声)和丰富绚丽的各种大七和弦，加上大胆的朦胧踏板运用，制造出别出心裁的钢琴音响，令这首作品在现代钢琴史上创立了相当重要的地位。甚至有学者认为这是音乐史上第一首钢琴印象主义作品，也因此启发了德彪西的部分写作。乐谱上题写了一位诗人诗中的句子：“住在河里的神，被水搔痒嫣然嬉笑着”。代表着水之流动和水面波光的第一主题清澈闪烁，以华丽琶音伴奏着的第二主题象征着优雅的河神，互相在交替和发展，期间带着各种绚丽色彩的快速音群和乐思发展，把水的各种动人形态以最生动美丽的声音描绘得淋漓尽致。
