第3首，《信经》（英语是Creed或Articles of Faith，源自拉丁文credo，意为“我信”）是传统天主教的权威性基本信仰纲要。源头可以追溯至初期大公教会的信仰准则（regula fidei），当时教会对外面临逼迫，对内面对异端的搅扰，特别是诺斯底派。于是当时的辩道士透过“教条神学”（theologia dogmatica）发展出信仰摘要，藉之说明信仰原委并澄清信仰内容。信经就是在这种情况下发展出来的。简单来说是教条式的信仰摘要。不过，信经主要表征天主教信仰的道统，不是对信仰内涵的绝对定义，因此可能出现附加条款的情形。以尼西亚信经为例，原版和修订过的信经是对特定的涉嫌有错误解说的异端学说做出隐含的谴责。当新的学说出现，之后被认定为异端时，这时就会有新附加的语句出现在信经里头，有如宪法或是一般法律条文的附加条款那样。信经附加语句的变动显示出神学在历史上的发展。
