第一幕 第一景：阿利亚菲里亚伯爵宫廷中的走廊台上所见为鲁纳伯爵王宫门口的夜景，一边通往鲁纳伯爵的寝室，门前聚集着鲁纳的卫队队长费南多与士兵们，大家都在等候伯爵出来。因为每日夜半伯爵会来到这里，听一位不知其名的骑士、游吟诗人的唱歌。因守护的士兵感到无聊而打瞌睡，费南多便向他们讲述伯爵幼时的经历。他用玛祖卡调子唱出的《黑暗与恐怖》，音律和谐之中还带有凶狠的音调，特别生色，是一首难得的男低音咏叹调。原来鲁纳伯爵的父亲有两个孩子，健康活泼，十分可爱，父亲特别庞爱小儿子嘉西亚。有一天的上午，如同鬼影的吉普赛老妇人出现在摇篮旁边，使嘉西亚吃惊的大哭。在保姆呼叫之下，伯爵逮捕了吉普赛老妇，她说是为占卜嘉西亚的命运而来，于是得到释放。可是从此以后，嘉西亚却变成体弱多病的孩子，伯爵认为是吉普赛老妇施巫术所致。即命令士兵逮捕老妇并处以火刑。不幸当天晚上嘉西亚就失踪了，而且在火刑场的老妇人骨灰旁边有一具小孩尸体。原来这位吉普赛老妇有一个女儿，因此大家认为吉普赛老妇的女儿一定是将伯爵的小儿子嘉西亚烧死在她母亲的身旁。此后老伯爵遂悲伤的度过晚年，可是老伯爵不相信嘉西亚已死。临终时告诉大儿子(即现在的鲁纳伯爵)，务必要找到他的弟弟嘉西亚，可是到目前尚未找到。卫士们和伯爵的扈从听了这段故事，睡意全消，大家异口同声地说：“这个可诅咒的地狱的魔妇”。这时候，时钟正敲响了，已经是夜晚12点钟了，钟声打断了他们的议论。第二景：伯爵府中的花园。这时候天色已晚，女伯爵莱奥诺拉偕同她忠诚的女伴伊内斯在花园散步。她对女伴述说自己的爱情故事，她说有一次在比武场上，碰见一个不认识的武士。她对这位骑士颇有情意，自此以后，那位英雄常在月下对着她窗口唱情歌，她心中倾慕着这位骑士所唱的：《寂静的夜》。这段乐歌的声调美妙无比。原来这位骑士就是老伯爵的小儿子嘉西亚。后来被阿苏茜娜吉普赛女儿扶养长大，使他成为堂堂的游吟诗人和骑士他现在的名字叫曼里科。这时伯爵鲁纳也来到庭园中的另一角落，等候游吟诗人并暗中窥视自己所倾慕的莱奥诺拉。由于伯爵和游吟诗人面貌十分相像，因此女伯爵几乎错把伯爵当成游吟诗人。过了不一会儿，游吟诗人诗人曼里科果真到达，提着鲁特琴对着莱奥诺拉唱着：《我孤独地在世上》伯爵碰到情敌曼里科便起争吵，继又起而斗剑。最后与想阻止他们决斗的莱奥诺拉一起织成奥妙又激烈的三重唱。结果曼里科负伤而逃，莱奥诺拉也晕倒在地上，幕下。
