[00:00.00]The Dong With the Luminous Nose [Edward Lear] - Kenneth Williams
[00:00.70]When awful darkness and silence reign
[00:02.91]Over the great Gromboolian plain
[00:04.88]Through the long long wintry nights
[00:06.85]When the angry breakers roar
[00:08.39]As they beat on the rocky shore
[00:10.34]When Storm-clouds brood on the towering heights
[00:13.02]Of the Hills of the Chankly Bore
[00:14.53]
[00:15.15]Then through the vast and gloomy dark
[00:17.61]There moves what seems a fiery spark
[00:19.70]A lonely spark with silvery rays
[00:21.86]Piercing the coal-black night
[00:23.55]A Meteor strange and bright
[00:25.90]Hither and thither the vision strays
[00:27.96]A single lurid light
[00:29.61]
[00:30.27]Slowly it wander pauses creeps
[00:32.28]Anon it sparklesflashes and leaps
[00:33.95]And ever as onward it gleaming goes
[00:36.06]A light on the Bong-tree stems it throws
[00:39.12]And those who watch at that midnight hour
[00:41.72]From Hall or Terrace or lofty Tower
[00:43.69]Cry as the wild light passes along
[00:46.11]The Dong the Dong
[00:47.78]The wandering Dong through the forest goes
[00:50.60]The Dong the Dong
[00:52.37]The Dong with a luminous Nose
[00:54.83]
[00:56.62]Long years ago
[00:57.71]The Dong was happy and gay
[00:59.86]Till he fell in love with a Jumbly Girl
[01:02.19]Who came to those shores one day
[01:04.35]For the Jumblies came in a sieve they did
[01:06.96]Landing at eve near the Zemmery Fidd
[01:08.99]
[01:10.01]Where the Oblong Oysters grow
[01:11.35]
[01:11.91]And the rocks are smooth and gray
[01:13.77]
[01:14.66]And all the woods and the valleys rang
[01:16.93]With the Chorus they daily and nightly sang
[01:19.35]Far and few far and few
[01:21.54]
[01:22.05]Are the lands where the Jumblies live
[01:24.48]Their heads are green and the hands are blue
[01:27.61]And they went to sea in a sieve
[01:30.00]
[01:31.73]Happily happily passed those days
[01:34.12]While the cheerful Jumblies staid
[01:36.16]They danced in circlets all night long
[01:38.78]To the plaintive pipe of the lively Dong
[01:40.94]In moonlight shine or shade
[01:42.57]
[01:43.11]For day and night he was always there
[01:45.98]By the side of the Jumbly Girl so fair
[01:48.41]With her sky-blue hands and her sea-green hair
[01:50.77]
[01:51.28]Till the morning came of that hateful day
[01:53.80]When the Jumblies sailed in their sieve away
[01:56.36]
[01:56.90]And the Dong was left on the cruel shore
[01:59.93]Gazing gazing for evermore
[02:02.21]Ever keeping his weary eyes on
[02:04.24]That pea-green sail on the far horizon
[02:07.29]Singing the Jumbly Chorus still
[02:09.51]As he sate all day on the grassy hill
[02:11.76]Far and few far and few
[02:13.82]
[02:14.38]Are the lands where the Jumblies live
[02:16.68]Their heads are green and the hands are blue
[02:19.96]And they went to sea in a sieve
[02:22.16]
[02:23.90]But when the sun was low in the West
[02:25.94]The Dong arose and said
[02:27.09]
[02:28.20]What little sense I once possessed
[02:30.16]Has quite gone out of my head
[02:31.71]
[02:32.43]And since that day he wanders still
[02:34.59]By lake and dorest marsh and hills
[02:36.54]Singing of somewhere in valley or plain
[02:39.08]Might I find my Jumbly Girl again
[02:41.54]
[02:42.24]For ever I'll seek by lake and shore
[02:44.91]Till I find my Jumbly Girl once more
[02:47.85]
[02:48.47]Playing a pipe with silvery squeaks
[02:50.55]Since then his Jumbly Girl he seeks
[02:52.67]And because by night he could not see
[02:54.75]He gathered the bark of the Twangum Tree
[02:56.99]On the flowery plain that grows
[02:59.12]And he wove him a wondrous Nose
[03:01.89]
[03:02.43]A Nose as strange as a Nose could be
[03:05.62]Of vast proportions and painted red
[03:07.79]And tied with cords to the back of his head
[03:10.08]In a hollow rounded space it ended
[03:12.96]With a luminous Lamp within suspended
[03:15.52]All fenced about
[03:16.62]With a bandage stout
[03:17.73]To prevent the wind from blowing it out
[03:20.20]And with holes all round to send the light
[03:22.52]In gleaming rays on the dismal night
[03:24.85]
[03:26.78]And now each night and all night long
[03:28.72]
[03:29.31]Over those plains still roams the Dong
[03:31.52]
[03:32.05]And above the wail of the Chimp and Snipe
[03:34.77]You may hear the squeak of his plaintive pipe
[03:37.45]While ever he seeks but seeks in vain
[03:39.88]To meet with his Jumbly Girl again
[03:42.58]
[03:43.11]Lonely and wild all night he goes
[03:45.83]The Dong with a luminous Nose
[03:47.65]
[03:48.24]And all who watch at the midnight hour
[03:50.80]From Hall or Terrace or lofty Tower
[03:52.92]Cry as they trace the Meteor bright
[03:55.13]Moving along through the dreary night
[03:57.33]This is the hour when forth he goes
[04:00.18]The Dong with a luminous Nose
[04:02.79]Yonder over the plain he goes
[04:05.48]He goes
[04:06.37]He goes
[04:07.05]
[04:07.76]The Dong with a luminous Nose
