a小调“枯木” 又译“冬风”，4/4拍，慢板-精神抖擞的快板，右手速度练习曲，引子有进行曲风格，由C大调至a小调;随即进入快板的第一段a小调、E大调、a小调至C 大调;第二段D小调、降A大调、E大调、A大调、C小调、e小调至a小调;第三段为第一段重复。彪罗对此曲评价：“在你能想象的范围内展现着最丰富的音，这是单纯的完美的钢琴音乐，而不是多种乐器的管弦乐。肖邦由此建立了钢琴音乐与管弦乐的界限。”它是肖邦用特定的练习音型，来更深一步描绘一幅革命失败的悲剧画面，开始四小节引子就象是召唤人们的号角声，接着是一段带“圣咏”性质的庄严乐段，由右手半音阶快速音流装饰展开。它的主题给人们以极为深刻的印象，很容易让人联想到贝多芬《热情奏鸣曲》末乐章，它们都表达了作曲家的革命意识和反抗压迫的心愿。
