第四幕，第四景：花园中的泉水旁。夜晚，佩利亚斯先登场，担心着为什么梅丽桑德迟到了，他决心在这个最后机会中，对她表白隐藏很久的心思。接着，梅丽桑德悄悄来到，她说因为戈洛在说梦话，而且我的衣服被钉子忤住，所以来迟了。佩利亚斯说，明天我就非要踏上遥远的旅程不可，梅丽桑德反问为什么必须出外旅行。他说这是由于爱你，说罢，情不自禁把她抱住。，梅丽桑德也表示说，第一次遇到你我就爱上你了。佩利亚斯随即以丰富的表情唱出：“你的声音，如同从春曰之海漂过来的……”，此时他们感到无比快乐，两人相互得很紧，陶醉在爱的幸福里。这时，传来有人关门的声音。可是他们却紧抱着说，就这样吧！这样吧！然后又激动地唱出：“来吧，哦！我的心脏好像在喉头疯狂般跳动”。突然，梅丽桑德在树影下，看到执剑的戈洛。佩利亚斯要她在自己上前阻止时先逃走，但梅丽桑德却说倒不如被他杀死，于是两人就疯狂地亲吻起来。戈洛挥动利剑飞奔过来，把佩利亚斯一刀刺死。佩利亚斯立刻倒在血泊中，梅丽桑德恐怖地大叫，戈洛无言地追杀逃走的梅丽桑德。
