第三幕，第一景：梅丽桑德卧室阳台外。华丽无比的序奏，在单纯的蠕动中，充满着微妙的情趣，并有无以言喻的色彩。幕启，一队巡逻队行走小径通过阳台下，梅丽桑德在塔上的阳台上梳头发，她唱着中世纪的旋律，“我的长发，垂到阳台下，沿着塔壁，等着心爱的人儿，漫长的一日，……”。佩利亚斯也从巡逻的小径上场。“你在阳台边做什么?歌唱得像罕见的小鸟……”“我在整理头发准备上床……”，“那么在塔壁上的是你的头发了，我以为是灯光的影子呢”。佩利亚斯走到阳台下驻足，摸着她垂下修长的乌发亲吻，“我从没看过这么美丽的头发，柔软而暖和，它的光亮掩盖了天上的光明，爱我吧”!佩利亚斯大胆地说出闷在心里的情意。梅丽桑德唱出：“放了我吧！有人来了就不好了”。“不，不放，今晚你是我的俘虏了，我吻你的头发，那就像吻你一样”!这时一群鸽子从塔顶飞上去，梅丽桑德即唱着：“那是我的鸽子，它们在黑暗中会迷失方向，也许不再回来”!“放我吧!有人来了，那是戈洛”!佩利亚斯放开了她头发，果然，戈洛出现在巡逻的小径上，他脸上装着若无其事，说着：“夜深了，你们真是像小孩，多稚气……”，他带着佩利亚斯走了。
