The Stranglers 1974在英国南部一个名叫Chiddington的小村庄成立。四个创始成员分别是Hugh Cornwell、Richard Thompson 、 Thompson和Kiki Dee 。他们有好几首歌曲都占到了英国音乐排行榜的前十名，如：Golden Brown、No More Heroes和Peaches。这为他们赢得了一大批追随者。The Stranglers很少遵循单一的曲风，总是试图把多种风格结合在一起而形成自己的风格。
