1920年为纪念德彪西去世而作的《管乐交响曲》（Symphonies of Wind Instruments），是标志着斯特拉文斯基新古典主义风格成熟的第一部作品。作品名称特意采用"Symphonies"这样一种复数的形式，表明所写的不是18世纪意义上的“交响曲”，而是巴洛克风格的“器乐合奏曲”。这部作品一方面表明了斯特拉文斯基对管乐器的偏爱（他使用了三支长笛、两支双簧管、英国管、三支降B调单簧管、三支大管[第三声部兼低音大管]、四支F调圆号、三支降B调小号、三支长号和大号共二十三件管乐器），表明他开始把创作的目光同时也投向各种器乐（此前创作的大都是综合性的舞台戏剧作品），另方面也表明他在巴洛克音乐模式基础上，力求纯粹、客观、超然、节俭控制并避免色彩的“新古典主义”（实际上是“新巴洛克主义”）标准的具体化，特别是在不使用一战前那种大规模的乐队和配器法，不使用常规或平衡性编制等做法方面——这实际上从《一个士兵的故事》就已经开始——显得尤具有斯特拉文斯基的特色。
