从前的《阿莱城的姑娘》是一部歌剧，是法国作曲家都德所作，比才为他写的配器，完成于1872年。同年在巴黎首演未获成功。后来比才把其中的四首编成第一部组曲，上演后颇受欢迎。这是一首具有法兰西风格病揉和了西班牙情调的田园诗，曾经有人这样评价过："它洋溢着作者心中的梦幻，形式纯朴自由，音调悠扬高雅，像慈母的微笑，像洁白的爱情的结晶，提琴部分的香气在弦线上散发出来，温柔的泪珠滚流着。《阿莱城姑娘》描写了法国普罗旺斯青年农民弗雷德里的爱情悲剧。剧情大致为：弗雷德里准备与一位阿莱城姑娘（这姑娘在原剧中并未出场）结婚，突然得悉姑娘的名誉不好，于是弗雷德里想忘掉这姑娘，而与童年女友薇叶特成婚。 婚礼当天，一个不速之客带来了那位阿莱城姑娘与其情人私奔的消息。内心依然深爱着阿莱城姑娘的弗雷德里无法控制自己，从阁楼窗口跳下去自杀了。
