《女武神的骑行》选自歌剧《女武神》，歌剧的剧情为《莱茵河的黄金》的继续。沃坦预见到阿尔贝里希将要从法弗纳手中夺回指环，进攻神殿，使众神遭殃，于是让他和智慧女神所生的九位女武神到各地寻觅阵亡的英勇武士并把他们带到天界，使他们复生，以守卫瓦尔哈拉神殿。沃坦有一对子女，儿子齐格蒙德，女儿齐格林德，两人在两地长大，互不相识。齐格林德自幼被人拐骗，被迫嫁给武士洪丁。齐格蒙德是洪丁仇人，一天晚上，他趁洪丁外出进入洪丁家，与齐格林德产生爱情。两人互诉身世，方知是兄妹。齐格蒙德在屋旁大树中获得父亲留下的宝剑，两人一同逃走。其实这一切都是沃坦所安排，但遭到了妻子女神弗里卡的反对。弗里卡是婚约守护神，力主要惩罚兄妹。沃坦无奈，只得让女儿（女武神之一）布仑希尔德将兄妹两人交给洪丁处置。洪丁与齐格蒙德决战，布仑希尔德用盾牌护住了齐格蒙德。齐格蒙德正要刺杀洪丁，却被沃坦敲断了剑，于是被洪丁所杀。布仑希尔德藏匿起齐格林德，并将齐格蒙德的宝剑碎片交给她，预言齐格林德将生下齐格蒙德的儿子－－最勇敢的英雄齐格弗里德。沃坦不得不惩罚布仑希尔德，他让她沉睡在山顶，让火神以火焰包围山顶，并预言：第一个唤醒你的男人将娶你为妻。
