《爱格蒙特序曲》用奏鸣曲形式写成，主题形象鲜明，是一首典型的标题音乐作品。根据音乐的情节和内容，序曲分为“在西班牙殖民者统治压迫下的荷兰人民的苦难”、“荷兰人民反抗西班牙暴政的激烈斗争”和“荷兰人民的胜利场面”这三大部分。第一部分，经过整个乐队奏出长和弦之后，弦乐部分在低音区奏出几个无比沉重的音符，仿佛在讲述荷兰人民在重压之下的苦难。这一部分给人以极端压抑的感觉。第二部分一段略显轻快的旋律使压抑的气氛暂时得到一些缓解，仿佛爱格蒙特号召人民团结起来，通过斗争来争取自由；但环境是严酷的，斗争是艰苦的，爱格蒙特揭竿而起，革命力量在不断壮大。第三部分经过顽强的斗争，爱格蒙特不幸殉难。但荷兰人民的革命斗争并未因此而结束，而是规模更加庞大、气势更为宏伟，终于一步步走向胜利。主题中那一往无前的英雄气概，正是贝多芬许多作品共同主题的体现。荷兰人民为胜利而狂欢，英雄爱格蒙特的名字和光辉形象也永远留在人民心中。
