这首乐曲力度变化很大，从极弱的音响开始，像负重的牛车从远慢慢走来，音乐到达高潮时有如牛车已走到跟前，可以听到小鼓模仿牛车走动时的吱吱声。乐队中低音声部缓慢而沉重的和弦，表现沉重的牛车不胜负荷地艰难行进，大号奏出一首牛车夫之歌，悲戚的音调表达农民的悲痛感受。这首如歌般的乐韵余音，又在加上弱音器的圆号和低音单簧管上出现，最后慢慢消逝。“牛车”远去后，“漫步”主题第四次出现，“漫步”主题采用与前全然不同的d小调调性，在木管乐器的高音区轻声奏出，音色透明、纯净、仿佛是漫步主人的片刻沉思，结束前还先现了下一段乐曲主题的一个动机，预示下一幅极有效果的图画。
