加特曼为基辅大门绘制的设计图，大门采用古俄罗斯风格的笨重格式，和富有民族色彩的各种装饰，并在大门之上冠有斯拉夫式的盔形圆顶，城门同教堂毗连。
音乐表现古朴、雄伟的俄罗斯气魄，包含三个互为对比的音乐形象，第一个城门主题，是一首庄严的颂歌，像巨人般宏伟和有气魄，形象庄严，音乐上与“漫步”主题有一定联系，管乐器的合奏强调此一独特气质，是全曲的核心，也为整部作品总结。
第二个音乐形象虔诚而严肃，使人联想到教堂中祷告的肃穆气氛。单簧管和大管的四重奏展示出教徒虔诚地唱着简朴、单纯和表情庄严的歌调，这个歌调与第一巨人般的主题间隔呈现，更加强调城门的雄伟和壮丽。
第三个是基辅古城全民欢腾的音乐形象，“漫步”主题又在乐队中出现，显得特别昂扬、庄严;城门塔楼并传来节日的钟声，鸣钟是古俄罗斯庆典仪式很重要的部份。乐曲中的钟声热烈辉煌，重现古俄罗斯首都基辅的节日气氛。最后由钟声带入巨人般的城门主题，乐曲推上高潮，爆发出一片欢腾的壮丽景象，城门主题越来越辉煌，越来越气势磅礴地结束整部作品。
套曲最后的两首乐曲取材于俄罗斯童话和叙事诗中的形象，为全曲增添了民族色彩。同时，在“墓穴”之后，这两首乐曲，明朗、欢欣的情绪终曲，带来光明、乐观的结尾。
