所谓海顿主题变奏曲，是勃拉姆斯根据海顿的一首管乐嬉游曲中的主题而作，但现在我们都知道这个主题并非海顿所写，应称为“圣安东尼主题变奏曲”更为合适。健康明朗的情调，纯净明晰的色彩，庄肃的宫廷气氛，这首变奏曲，的确有着海顿的某些音乐性情。结合了海顿的温文尔雅，勃拉姆斯的含蓄深情更添了一分贵族的优雅和高贵。在勃拉姆斯的传记中，常常会提到他写给克拉拉·舒曼信中的这句话：“我对这个曲子尤为偏爱，它比其他任何作品都更令我满意。” 乐队版和所谓“海顿的原作”一样，由双簧管和巴松管带出（不过“原作”中还有一种名为“蛇管”的古乐器），有一些民间风格，但加入了弦乐和圆号。勃拉姆斯的配器更加丰富。
