[ti:Word Of Mouth(live版)] [ar:Laurie Anderson] [al:The Ugly One With The Jewels And Other Stories] [by:] [offset:0] [00:00.00]Word Of Mouth (Live) - Laurie Anderson [00:00.41]In 1980 as part of a project called Word of Mouth [00:05.29] [00:06.42]I was invited along with a living other artists [00:10.40]To go to Panape a tiny island [00:13.30]In the middle of the Pacific [00:15.02] [00:16.29]The idea was that we'd sit around talking for a few [00:20.14]Days and that the conversations [00:22.70]Would be made into a talking record [00:25.12] [00:27.64]The first night we were all really jet-lagged but [00:31.79]As soon as we sat down the organizers set up all [00:35.23]These mikes and switched on [00:37.27]Thousand white light bulbs [00:39.24] [00:40.22]And we tried our best to seem as [00:42.35] [00:42.88]Intelligent as possible [00:45.09] [00:46.63]Television had just come to Panape a week before [00:49.80]We arrived and there was a strong excitement [00:52.99]Around the island as people crowded [00:55.23]Around the few sets [00:56.89] [00:58.40]Then the day after we arrived in a bizarre replay [01:02.48]Of the first TV show ever broadcast to Panape [01:05.85] [01:07.06]Prisoners escaped from a jail broke into the [01:11.35]Radio station and murdered the DJ [01:15.18] [01:16.38]Then they went off on a [01:17.53]Rampage through the jungle [01:19.44] [01:20.27]Armed with lawnmower blades In all four people [01:26.70]Were murdered in cold blood [01:29.28] [01:30.48]Detectives flown [01:32.28]In from Guam to investigate [01:34.56]Swarmed everywhere [01:35.99] [01:37.37]At night we stayed around in our cottages [01:40.24] [01:41.29]Listening out into the jungle [01:44.69] [01:49.34]Finally the local chief decided to hold a [01:53.16]Ceremony for the murder victims [01:55.12] [01:57.14]The artist Marina Brownovich and I went [01:59.33] [02:00.02]As representatives of our group to film it [02:03.26] [02:05.12]The ceremony was held in a large thatched [02:08.45]Lean-to and most of the ceremony involved [02:12.33]Cooking beans in pits and brewing [02:15.61]A dark drink from roots [02:18.51] [02:20.17]The smell was overwhelming Dogs around barking [02:26.39] [02:27.52]And everybody seemed to be having a [02:28.96]Fairly good time as funerals go [02:33.60] [02:35.96]After a few hours Marina and I [02:38.48]Were presented to the chief [02:39.69] [02:40.64]Who was sitting on a raised platform above the pits [02:44.08] [02:45.41]We'd been told we couldn't turn our backs on the [02:48.11]Chief at any time or ever be higher than he was [02:52.52] [02:53.87]So we scrambled up onto the platform with our film [02:56.74]Equipment and sort of duck-waddled up [02:59.95]Backwards to the chief [03:02.12] [03:05.11]As a present I brought one of those [03:07.53]Fred Flintstone cameras [03:10.06]The kind where the film canister is [03:11.89]Also the body of the camera [03:14.01] [03:14.73]And I presented it to the chief [03:16.61] [03:18.63]He seemed delighted and began to click off pictures [03:22.07] [03:23.95]He wasn't advancing the film between shots [03:26.94] [03:27.86]But since we were told we shouldn't [03:29.18]Speak unless spoken to [03:31.42] [03:32.67]I wasn't able to inform him that he [03:35.66]Wasn't going to get twelve pictures [03:39.10] [03:40.50]But only one very very complicated one [03:46.29] [03:49.13]After a couple more hours the chief lifted his hand [03:52.50] [03:53.61]And there was absolute silence [03:56.70] [03:58.39]All the dogs had suddenly stopped barking [04:01.41] [04:02.68]We looked around and saw the dogs [04:05.91] [04:07.40]All their throats had been simultaneously [04:10.36]Cut and their bodies [04:13.16] [04:14.73]Still breathing pierced with rods [04:18.65] [04:19.17]Were turning on those pits [04:21.99] [04:25.08]The chief insisted we join in the meal but Marina [04:29.18]Had turned green and I asked [04:31.82]If we could just have ours to go [04:35.66] [04:38.72]They carefully wrapped the dogs in leaves [04:41.61] [04:42.19]And we carried their bodies away [04:46.01]Word Of Mouth(live版) - Laurie Anderson
