这首超过十五分钟的曲子乍一听显得十分单调乏味，甚至曾有人称它为“偏执狂的作品”。因为乐曲从旋律、和声到节奏、速度，始终保持不变。音乐的第一主题和第二主题在小鼓和铃鼓的固定音型伴奏下，一问一答不厌其烦地重复进行，而且乐曲始终建立在C大调上，只是在结尾两个小节才转入E大调，但随即又回到了C大调上。据说，另一位法国作曲家施密特首次听到这首乐曲时，曾烦躁地大声问道：“为什么不转调？”可见音乐有其单一的特性。音乐唯一的变化就是渐次增强的音乐及乐队的规模，听起来有一种自始如一的执着感觉，尽管这种执着近乎顽固，这首乐曲所传达出的不屈不挠的性格却一直深为广大音乐爱好者所喜爱。
