"Good King Wenceslas" is a popular Christmas carol that tells a story of a Bohemian king going on a journey and braving harsh winter weather to give alms to a poor peasant on the Feast of Stephen (December 26, the First Day of Christmas). During the journey, his page is about to give up the struggle against the cold weather, but is enabled to continue by following the king's footprints, step for step, through the deep snow. The legend is based on the life of the historical Saint Wenceslaus I, Duke of Bohemia or Svatý Václav in Czech (907–935). The name Wenceslas is a Latinised version of the modern Czech language “Václav”.In 1853, English hymnwriter John Mason Neale wrote the "Wenceslas" lyrics, in collaboration with his music editor Thomas Helmore, and the carol first appeared in Carols for Christmas-Tide, 1853.[1][2] Neale's lyrics were set to the melody of a 13th-century spring carol "Tempus adest floridum" ("The time is near for flowering") first published in the 1582 Finnish song collection Piae Cantiones.

[00:01.58]Good King Wenceslas looked out
[00:04.57]On the feast of Stephen
[00:07.48]When the snow lay 'round about
[00:10.48]Deep and crisp and even
[00:13.34]Brightly shone the moon that night
[00:16.44]Though the frost was cruel
[00:19.46]When a poor man came in sight
[00:22.36]Gathering winter fuel
[00:27.61]
[00:29.07]Hither page and stand by me
[00:31.98]If thou knows it telling
[00:34.93]Yonder peasant who is he
[00:37.81]Where and what his dwelling
[00:40.77]Sire he lives a good league hence
[00:43.71]Underneath the mountain
[00:46.68]Right against the forest fence
[00:49.51]By Saint Agnes's fountain
[00:54.66]
[00:56.04]Bring me flesh and bring me wine
[00:58.96]Bring me pain logs hither
[01:01.85]Thou and I will see him dine
[01:04.72]When we bear them thither
[01:07.67]Page and monarch forth they went
[01:10.62]Forth they went together
[01:13.58]Through the rude wind's wild lament
[01:16.54]And the bitter weather
[01:22.39]
[01:23.87]Sire the night is darker now
[01:26.91]And the wind blows stronger
[01:29.85]Fails my heart I know not how
[01:32.85]I can go no longer
[01:35.89]Mark my footsteps good my page
[01:38.77]Tread thou in them boldly
[01:41.68]Thou shall find the winter's rage
[01:44.52]Freeze thy blood less coldly
[01:50.35]
[01:52.35]In his master's steps he trod
[01:55.32]Where the snow lay dinted
[01:58.36]Heat was in the very sod
[02:01.31]Which the Saint had printed
[02:04.22]Therefore Christian men be sure
[02:07.19]Wealth or rank possessing
[02:10.24]Ye who now will bless the poor
[02:13.25]Shall yourselves find blessing
