《绿袖子》是一首著名的英国民谣，在伊丽莎白女王时代就已经已广为流传，相传是英王亨利八世所作，他是一位业余的长笛演奏家。亨利八世脾气暴躁，却爱上了一位总是穿一身绿衣的平民女子，那女子知道他属于深宫大院，不可能与自己有结果，就逃走了，而国王却念念不忘，日思夜想不得，就让宫里的人全都穿上绿衣裳来纪念她。后来在英国形成了一个传统，自己的衣袖上套着情人的袖子”便是意味着“向世人宣告自己有心仪的对象”，也就是说当穿戴着情人的衣袖，便是秀恩爱，向世人宣告对她的爱意。 后来一位20世纪的英国作曲家沃恩·威廉斯把它写成了《绿袖子幻想曲》。
