乐曲采用自由的奏鸣曲形式，首尾部分描写了人们欢度狂欢节的景象，音乐气氛热烈，情调明朗，充满生机，热烈欢快的旋律，营造出浓浓的节日氛围。一开始由整个乐队兴奋地奏出欢快的第一主题,曲调热情奔放,具有强烈的节庆气氛,也表现了生命的欣欣向荣蓬勃发展。随后，乐曲又很快转到了描写节庆的第二主题，坚定而开朗，象征了生命的力量。当乐曲速度逐渐减慢为小行板，并转为G大调，3/8拍时，单簧管奏出轻柔的主题，这个充满诗情的主题带有浓郁的田园风味。随后，前面的几个主题不断地发展变化，犹如炽热的生命之火在蔓延着。最后，乐曲在描写节日场面的第一主题的发展中，加入了铃鼓和三角铁等色彩性打击乐器，在狂欢的气氛中终曲。
