《平均律钢琴曲集》是巴赫运用名为“十二平均律”的作曲技法创作的钢琴曲集。曲集依据十二平均律的调性进行创作，每一首均由一首前奏曲与一首赋格组成。第一首采用C大调调性音阶进行作曲，连续的琶音滚动贯穿全曲，四平八稳的速度加上温和的力度，使乐曲不仅作为钢琴练习曲十分出色，作为艺术乐曲同样怡人。 《平均律钢琴曲集》分上下卷，分别完成于1722年与1740年。在这部作品中，巴赫将前人复杂笼统的作曲技法加以精简，结合当时尚未得到重视的“十二平均律”技法，将二十四个音阶调性融入每一首作品内。在这部作品后，十二平均律逐渐成为西方作曲的主流技法。
