咏叹调，她是一首庄重尊贵的萨拉班德舞曲，充满着纤弱而自制的情感。法国式的风情高度美化着她——装饰音不再是随意的附加，而是组成旋律线的主要部分。相较于表面的旋律，低音部暗示的和声更加引人注意，那是构成随后30个变奏的基础。这个主题由四个和声结构完全相同的八小节句子构成：她首先建立在G大调的主音上；后来转向属音和弦；在经历第一次反复之后她从属音移往关系调（e小调），在返回最后8小节的主音之前，更大的张力被注入到音乐中来（之后是第二部分的反复）。整部作品一共有三个g小调的变奏，在那些地方降E大调代替了e小调，灰暗的调式显现光明（异常特别的第25变奏除外，那里持续笼罩在降e小调的黯淡阴沉之中）。
