《悲剧序曲，作品81》作于1880年，为《学院节庆序曲》的姐妹篇，以不太快的速度开头，开头的两个强烈和弦后来起到主题的作用，接着奏出一条相当呆板、无伴奏的旋律线，即序曲的主要主题。这首序曲以非常自由的奏鸣曲式写成，严肃的开头得到充分发展后，加强了忧郁。很久以后才出现抒情的第二主题。短小而深刻的展开部以减慢的速度开始，两支双簧管采用呈示部中突出的附点节奏，展开部把它变成几乎是舒伯特情调的悲伤而短小的进行曲调。这首序曲是音乐会经常演奏的曲目。
