这首《天鹅》是整套组曲中最受欢迎的和流传最广的一首乐曲。圣-桑的不象其他的乐曲意在模仿和嘲弄《动物狂欢节》里的大部分曲目都是带有嘲讽性质的，包括一些过去和当时的作曲家的作品，甚至连圣-桑自己的也有，而是刻意寻求表现天鹅本身固有的美和人们对它所作的美学评价。因此，它的主要旋律几乎没有什么装饰，但这样的轻描淡写却比华美的辞藻更适合于天鹅本身，也显得更加一往情深。圣-桑的《动物狂欢节》作于1886年，用两架钢琴和管弦乐队演奏，乐曲的副标题叫做“大动物园幻想曲”。这部作品是作者专为自己闹着玩儿写的，由于其中引用其他作曲家的一些曲调，大都经过并非善意的改动，常常带有讥讽的意味，因此，当作曲家在世时，除了1887年2月在巴黎秘密为他的朋友演出过一次外，圣桑禁止在他生前演奏或出版这部作品，惟独其中的“天鹅”一曲可以例外。
