肖邦在这首前奏曲中，形象化地使用了一个固定的单音，它伴以单调的节奏型，好像是对有节奏的雨滴声的描绘。这首前奏曲的音乐形象虽然比较单一，但它仍然有许多细腻的变化。 乐曲的开始部分十分抒情，歌唱性的旋律伴随着悠悠自如的“雨滴”声，仿佛是从朦胧的雨中传来的田园牧歌----这段“牧歌”的情绪也微微地起伏变化。开始是沉醉在大自然的的悠闲，慢慢地变得有些激动，好像是作者对大自然发出的感叹。中间部分是一个非常奇特的段落，它把人们引进神秘的境界。低声部缓缓行进的旋律伴随着单调而神奇的“雨滴”音型，显得十分深沉、威严。有人把这段音乐看作是一幅富有浪漫气息的图画：夜间，一列人群在庄严而阴郁的众赞歌中神秘地缓步而行 。中间部分的音乐形象也不是一成不变的，在庄严的众赞歌中，夹杂着各种情绪变化。第一个对比的形象，是出现在十二小节的众赞歌以后，低声部的八度双音，在五度的跳进中起伏，加上很强的力度，使这一部分的音乐形象显得十分强烈、鲜明。中间部分的第二个对比形象，是在它的末尾。这是一段十分抒情的音乐，优美的旋律和歌唱性的低音线条综合在中声部隐约可见的“雨滴”声中，显得十分静谧。前奏曲的再现部分比较简练，它只再现了一个乐句。但它的尾声比较完整，并且意味深长：音乐渐渐远去，“雨滴”声慢慢消失，留给人们的是无比丰富的想象。
