加特曼在这幅水彩画中，描绘自己在向导带引，在暗淡的灯光下参观巴黎地下墓穴的情景。这墓穴是殉教神父安葬之地，据说也是举行早期基督教神秘仪式的场所。这段乐曲被划分为前后两小段，第一段由一系列缓慢、低沉、阴暗、不稳定的和弦组成，表现墓穴中的阴森气氛和作曲家因亡友引起的阴郁心情，画中墓穴使他联想到已死的亡友。第二段标题是“用冥府的语言同死者谈话”，作曲家在原稿上写道：“亡友加特曼的灵魂领我到骷髅面前，向骷髅们呼唤，于是骷髅寂静地发出了光辉。”在钢琴高音区微弱的颤音下，营造出死寂和茫然的气氛中，出现的是明朗而乐天的“漫步”主题，不过，已变得几乎不可辨识，小调调性，采用了复调手法，仿似一首严肃而神圣的悼歌，或一首安魂曲，在不同乐器组上呼应着。整段音乐笼罩着沉寂、茫然、忧郁的情绪和气氛，是套乐曲中最严肃、悲哀的音乐。
