第一幕，瑞士吉洛尔的霍赫斯特夫村，村人们正在庆贺当地贵族，拉·瓦利父亲斯特罗明戈的70岁生日。女声合唱之后，小瓦尔特唱过雪节之歌《有一天向慕左尔高峰前进》，海根巴赫抬着猎获的熊上场，夸耀其捕猎能力。斯特罗明戈认为这种事不值得夸耀，海根巴赫被激怒，把老人推倒。拉·瓦利上场见此场景，叫喊谁对我父亲无礼，海根巴赫惊异于拉·瓦利的美貌，声称是斯特罗明戈先侮辱他。斯特罗明戈把场上的年轻人都赶走，盖尔纳趁机对他说，他爱着拉·瓦利，拉瓦利却爱着海根巴赫。斯特罗明戈叫来拉·瓦利，命令她今天必须与盖尔纳结婚。拉·瓦利告诉盖尔纳，你是我的好友，但我并不爱你，她坚决地告诉父亲，绝不与盖尔纳结婚。斯特罗明戈生气地让拉·瓦利选择，要不就结婚，要不就离开这个家。拉瓦利唱著名的咏叹调《那么我要去遥远的地方》，决心离家出走。
