此曲选自《歌剧院的幽灵》的第一幕，舞台灯光恢复正常，而时间已回到了49年前。那是巴黎歌剧院的舞台上，艺术总监雷耶尔先生正帮助首席女高音卡尔洛塔和首席男高音皮尔吉（卡尔洛塔的情夫）排歌剧《汉尼拔》。而吉莉夫人也正在指导伴唱伴舞的女孩们进行练习。这时，即将退休的老经理带来了两位客人费尔明和安德烈，他们两位即将接任歌剧院经理的位置。正当卡尔洛塔在为两位新领导献上一首当晚准备演出的Think of Me时，突然舞台天幕上掉下来的一块布景引起了骚乱，大家纷纷猜测是歌剧院的幽灵干的。卡尔洛塔耍起小脾气不肯继续排练，并离场声称不再参加歌剧院的演出。正在焦急的时候，吉莉夫人向大家推荐克里斯提娜，费尔明问克里斯提娜是谁教会她这么美妙的歌喉，克里斯提娜却说不知道，于是大家抱着无可奈何的心态试听。结果，在排练场和当晚的演出中，克里斯提娜的歌喉征服了所有人，包括当晚到场观看演出的年轻的贵族拉乌尔，他也是歌剧院的资助人。正在这时，拉乌尔专门来拜访了，原来拉乌尔认出了台上的克里斯提娜就是他儿时的同伴。拉乌尔准备邀请克里斯提娜共进晚餐，于是就出门去取放在外面的帽子。这时，房间里又出现了魅影的声音。魅影愤恨地责备拉乌尔企图引诱克里斯提娜离开音乐的王国。克里斯提娜被魅影的声音震慑并迷惑，通过魅影设置在穿衣镜上的机关，跟随魅影走入镜子背后的暗道。等拉乌尔回到屋内，已经空无一人。魅影用歌声引诱克里斯提娜来到他居住的地下湖心的屋内。在这里，他继续用Music of the Night引诱克里斯提娜的心智以及表达自己的爱意。最后，克里斯提娜在看到魅影做的穿戴婚纱的自己的蜡像后，在魅影的美妙的歌声中晕厥过去。魅影让克里斯提娜躺在床上休息，自己则埋头进行新的歌剧的创作。
