霍金斯终身未娶，但他热爱儿童，自己也童心未泯。 1857年的圣诞节，他想给他的姪儿女们一份既有意义又出奇的圣诞礼物，于是他作了这首诗歌。他描绘三博士自东方跋涉长途远道前来朝主的事蹟。 歌的旋律活泼，带有浓厚的民谣气息，它的节奏令人感到骆驼沉重的步伐。这首歌刊印在他1862年出版的诗歌集中，不久就被选入各教会的讚美诗集中，也有许多人将它编成圣诞剧表演。
