第三幕 第一景：雷纳托的书房。墙上是书架，暖炉上摆着两个青铜壶，另一面墙上悬挂着市长的肖像画。手执利剑的雷纳托带着阿米莉亚进来，他开始谴责妻子的不贞，冷酷地命令她自行了断。阿米莉亚做出最后的请求“我最后的愿望”，她要求和儿子再见一面雷纳托接受了她的请求，就唱出“去吧，准你和儿子见面”，让妻子走进另一房间。然后瞪着壁上所挂市长里卡多的尚像画，唱出咏叹调《原来是你玷污了她的心》。他恨自己尽管对里卡多忠贞不二，却还是被他戏弄了，然后又回忆起从前和阿米莉亚所过的幸福时光。接着依约定前来的对塞缪尔和托马斯来访了。雷纳托宣誓说即使儿子变成人质，他也要参加暗杀市长的行动，于是这三个人便讨论由谁去杀里卡多。他们决定用抽签的方式，于是把写上名字的三张纸条放进壶里。这时阿米莉亚回来了，雷纳托命令她任选一个壶，结果把字条拿起来一看，居然是雷纳托。激动的雷纳托以奇特的神态唱出：《这是你吗?》这时候，里卡多的侍僮奥斯卡送来市长假面舞会的邀请卡。随后这三个男人就密谋利用假面的掩护下进行暗杀，但阿米莉亚则为此苦恼万分，而奥斯卡则为热闹的舞会无比开心，在有趣的五重唱中幕落。第二景：里卡多的书房。里卡多尽管还思念着阿米莉亚，但他下决心把雷纳托送回英国，决意淡忘对阿米莉亚的爱，于是唱出咏叹调《我将永远失去你》。他相信自己对她挚爱的心跳声，一定能传到她所在地的天空下，然后在派令下签名。接着，侍僮奥斯卡进来，交给里卡多一封由陌生女人要他转交的秘密信。拆开一看，上面警告市长今晚的假面舞会中，有人将谋刺他。这时从后方的舞厅中，传来热闹的舞蹈音乐，里卡多装得很镇静的样子，决定照样出席这场假面舞会。他把埃德加尔多遣走后，又激动地高唱“我又能再次看到她”。
