HQ巴赫的康塔塔大部分是宗教性的，这些宗教康塔塔建立在路德赞美诗的传统之上，马丁·路德(1483—1564)的宗教改革，规定教友共同参与礼拜仪式。为这目的，他首创在宗教仪式中采用德语而不用拉丁语。路德和他的助手们创作了第一批赞美诗，巴赫在路德赞美诗基础上，使康塔塔这种形式得以更加完美。当时的德国康塔塔吸收了歌剧中的宣叙调、咏叹调、二重唱的风格，吸收了法国歌剧序曲与意大利器乐表现的色彩感，变成一种完美的艺术整体。宗教性的康塔塔在宗教仪式中和布道及布道后的祈祷一样，与当天宣讲的福音书有关。宗教年度的每一个星期天都需要一部康塔塔，加上假日和特殊场合所需的作品，每年大约需要60部康塔塔。巴赫大约创作了总数4—5套的康塔塔，总计在300首左右，除散佚的以外，现在留下来的大约有200多首宗教康塔塔。除宗教康塔塔外，还有一些世俗康塔塔。
