HQ第一幕，薇奥莉塔家中大厅，幕启，华灯初上时分，巴黎名交际花薇奥莉塔家中贺客盈门，这场宴会是为了庆祝薇奥莉塔身体康复特地举办的。其中一位来宾卡斯东子爵带了另外一位新面孔─阿弗列德?杰尔蒙─登门拜访；卡斯东告诉薇奥莉塔：当她卧病在床期间，阿弗列德每天必定前来殷切问候薇奥莉塔的病情。薇奥莉塔听了之后，只是淡淡地说：她不值得阿弗列德这般费心，而阿弗列德急则忙表示自己是一片真心。薇奥莉塔闻言，深感荣幸，同时她也半开玩笑地对另外一位仰慕者多男爵说：为什么从没见过男爵也对她这么用心呢？男爵本想辩驳，却被薇奥莉塔的好友弗洛拉劝住了；弗洛拉要男爵少开尊口，而男爵表示他是愈看阿弗列德愈不顺眼。卡斯东子爵发现阿弗列德站在一旁沉默不语，于是起哄要他即席创作一首饮酒诗，以娱大众。在征得薇奥莉塔的同意后，阿弗列德像是德到了灵感一般，即兴高歌一曲─歌颂爱情、也歌颂欢乐时光！(饮酒歌)这时从另外一个房间传来一阵音乐声，薇奥莉塔表示：舞会即将开始，请大家移驾前往跳舞，但薇奥莉塔才刚起身，就感到一阵头晕目眩，众人上前关心她的身体状况，而薇奥莉塔只说休息一下即可，先请大伙前去尽兴跳舞，稍待片刻她再过去招呼。在众人离去后，薇奥莉塔从镜中观得自己苍白的脸孔，但她一转身，就发现了阿弗列德还在大厅里。阿弗列德上前关怀薇奥莉塔的身体健康，同时也表达出心中的爱慕之意；薇奥莉塔心中虽然感动，但还是劝阿弗列德不要在她身上浪费时间。(二重唱：在那快乐的一天) 忽然，卡斯东子爵闯进大厅，眼见阿弗列德与薇奥莉塔两人“互诉情怀”，于是也很识趣地先行离开。就在阿弗列德起身告白之时，薇奥莉塔叫住阿弗列德，并且给了他一朵茶花，要阿弗列德在茶花凋谢时再回来拜访；而原本为爱所拒的阿弗列德，闻言不禁大喜，便约定在第二天必将回来探望薇奥莉塔。在阿弗列德离去后，众人也陆续回到大厅，向薇奥莉塔道谢告辞，准备迎接第二天的来临。此时原本吵杂的大厅，只留下薇奥莉塔一人，她的内心起伏不已，有一种莫名的感觉涌上心头。想起刚才阿弗列德的真情表白，薇奥莉塔心中有些心神不定，同时又想起了自己卑微的出身，更觉与爱情无望。忽然间，像是有所觉悟似地，薇奥莉塔起身高唱“及时行乐”─与其等待不知何时才能到来的爱情，不如把握良机，享受眼前的欢乐。(咏叹调：好生奇怪！...梦中情人...及时行乐！)
