第一乐段，提纲挈领，具有概括性，既为全曲定下了基调，又为以下几段的发展提供了“基因”。一开始是一段如歌的旋律，舒缓、悠闲，愉悦之情如流水般地从心中流淌出来，富有诗情画意，第二乐段，节奏轻快，情绪活泼、跳荡，反复加花演奏，与第一乐段形成音乐形象的对比。其速度比前一段略快，十个附点八分音符构成这一乐段的骨架，带动连串音符的行进，表现了活跃的情绪。中间乐句的出现，使调性有上移五度的倾向，接着又迅速回落，使人感到情绪中似有某种不稳定因素。两个长泛音恰到好处，起了连接和平衡的作用，使情绪得到适度控制。第三乐段，，反复吟唱，饱含着对社会、对事业和理想的思索。双附点（附点音符加附点）的运用，使人产生一种神思恍惚之感，似乎悠闲之中隐含着忧郁。眼前虽然暂时安乐，前景如何，自己的愿望能否顺利实现，一切都还未能预料。同一句型的反复出现，显示作者有难以排解的思绪。这一乐段处于全曲中心，是精心之作。第四乐段是一个轻巧、诙谐的小快板乐段，其旋律推进比第二乐段更跳跃。这一段共用了十五个，乐句以断奏和小连音居多，情绪活跃而轻快。泛音的运用得心应手，而且独具匠心。它的特点是：短，时值短；快，速度快；连，连续使用；多，一个乐段中用了几十个。这是刘天华对二胡演奏技巧的贡献之一，为后人树立了创新的范例。第五乐段是第三乐段的部分再现，最后加上三个泛音结束全曲，使这一段具有尾声性质。第三乐段在全曲的中心地位，在这里又得到证实。作为结尾的三个泛音幽远隽永，回味无穷；尤其是末尾一个“i”，落在内弦最下把上，若有若无，忽隐忽现，令人侧耳寻声，凝神深思。情绪上更趋平静，乐曲渐慢渐弱，在梦幻般的意境中结束全曲。整首曲子旋律清妙动听，在体现作者返朴归真、怡然自乐的同时表达了对事业的思虑及未来的憧憬。悠闲中缺少欢乐；安居中显得空虚。这便是刘天华当时的处境和心态。
