圣桑根据昂利·卡萨利斯的诗作创作此首交响诗，诗中描写中世纪一个广泛流传的传说：在每年的万圣节（11月1日）午夜，死神现身并演奏小提琴，从坟墓中召唤逝去的死者为它舞蹈，这场骷髅之舞将一直持续到破晓，已亡者才会再度回到它们的坟墓。乐曲旋律采用了中世纪末日审判的圣咏《愤怒的日子》的曲调，给人以阴阳怪气的感觉。起初音很弱，逐渐发展到全奏，好象聚集到墓场上的骷髅越来越多，舞跳得越来越热烈。木琴的干枯音色，描写了骷髅在跳舞中的互相碰撞声。乐曲根据诗的内容，从半夜的钟响开始，先用竖琴在D音上反复了十二次，表明半夜零点的到来。突然，独奏小提琴奏出圆舞曲的节奏，描写死神的骷髅互相击碰着出现了。作品要求小提琴用特殊的调弦，形象地刻画出骸骨的击碰声。接着由长笛以弱音奏出富有特征的主题，小提琴奏出坟墓的主题，也就是第二主题，描绘出深夜墓地寂静和恐怖的气氛。整部作品具有神秘、恐怖的特色。
