《蝴蝶夫人》曾在1904年2月17日当天于米兰市的史卡拉歌剧院首演，可惜，该次首演却落得惨淡收场。然而，普契尼并没有气馁，反而大幅修改剧本，将较为长的第二幕分作两幕;改编完成的版本其后亦在1904年5月28日由乌克兰著名女高音Solomiya Krushelnytska于小镇布雷西亚演出，该演出最终获得空前成功。正因如此，该歌剧更于1907年以大热姿态登陆纽约市的大都会歌剧院。如今，《蝴蝶夫人》于意大利演出时有两幕，在美国演出则有三幕;歌唱者方面，蝴蝶夫人一角首演时由罗西纳·史托尔齐欧(Rosina Storchio)所饰演，上世纪著名的日本女高音三浦环(Tamaki Miura)亦曾饰演蝴蝶夫人一角，大受好评并获得作曲家本人的首肯。而华裔女高音黄英所饰演的蝴蝶夫人比西方的演员更贴近这个角色的东方特质：音色在高音中满含东方女性的柔婉，随着情节与情绪的进展，柔婉中又不断添加进羞涩、喜悦、思念、绝望，表情与动作也与角色更贴切(SONY Columbia公司出品了该版《蝴蝶夫人》的DVD)。
