SQ化石（Fossils）编制：单簧管、木琴、双钢琴、弦乐五部。这回，圣桑不但嘲笑了别人的作品已经僵化和过时，也嘲笑了他自己。圣桑自己的《骷髅之舞》中已为人们所熟知的那些白骨的声响，现在用木琴干枯但明亮的音色再现了出来；而同这些只剩下白骨一副的鬼魂主题相交织的，还有两首古法国民歌的动机以及摘自罗西尼的《塞维利亚的理发师》中罗西娜的咏叹调的一个乐句（单簧管）。所有这些曲调都这样快就变成化石了吗？
