Introduction-Philharmonia Orchestra
第一幕：街市，天主教徒征服一群异教徒胡西特等之后，正在庆祝胜利。他们决定对犹太人也采取同等严厉的手段，因此命令所有犹太人的商店，即刻关闭停止营业，否则便要处极刑。但是有一位杰出的犹太金匠埃莱沙，竟不听命令，仍旧开店营业。他因此被捕，并被判处死刑，但有红衣主教布罗尼代他向群众求情，并加以保护。这位红衣主教，暗中对这位犹太商人和他的养女雷雪儿，有份特别的关注，原因是他希望埃莱沙能告诉他已失踪的女儿的消息。可是埃莱沙不相信主教布罗尼对自己的照顾。有位名叫塞缪尔的青年，他在追求雷雪儿，并且得到了她的爱情。这位青年实际上就是很有势力的雷奥波德王子。他故而在后来能够援救她和她的父亲。雷雪儿虽然感到奇怪，但她始终不知道塞缪尔的身份。这幕开始时教堂奏着庄严的感恩赞美歌，叩人心弦；后来红衣主教布罗尼唱了一支抒情咏叹调，在歌词中祈求主宽恕不信天主的人，这首著名的男中音的咏叹调，是要有宽宏庄重而又柔美的声音才能胜任。
