出生在Royal,Nebraska，Southern三岁开始学钢琴，六岁开始学习正规的古典钢琴。她在内布拉斯加州奥马哈的Sacred Heart学习古典钢琴和演唱，也是在那里她开始对爵士乐产生了兴趣。

在奥马哈的Blackstone Hotel开始了她的职业生涯以后，在第二次世界大战期间她加入了United States Navy的巡演。20世纪40年代后期，她在芝加哥的俱乐部工作，并在那里为Anita O'Day弹奏了钢琴。这段期间，她因她的作品而出名，特别是歌曲《Torch Songs》。
