In 1988, Tommy Olivencia suggested that Rivera sing solo, leading to his signing with CBS at 16. Rivera gained fame with his albums "Empezando A Vivir" and "Abriendo Puertas," producing hits like "De La Cabeza A Los Pies" and "Esa Niña." His third album, "Cuenta Conmigo," became the best-selling salsa album in history and won him multiple awards. The song "Amores Como El Nuestro" from this album was sampled in hip-hop songs and became widely recognized.

Rivera continued releasing albums throughout the 1990s and 2000s, including "Cara de Niño," "Lo Nuevo y lo Mejor," and "Magia," which featured hit songs. He also experimented with ballad music in "De Otra Manera" and released tribute albums to Frankie Ruiz and Carlos Gardel.
