1776年，随着北美殖民地与英国的战事日益加剧以及人民渴求独立的情绪高涨，北美的十三个殖民地在该年的7月4日宣告独立，是为美利坚合众国。
法国-印第安战争中的英雄本杰明在妻子死后，养育七名子女，在南卡罗莱纳州过著安稳务农工作。可是，自从该州支持对大陆军援助的法案通过，本杰明的长子加布里耶尔不理他的劝告，加入国民军。
两年后，加布里耶尔传送军函时受伤回家，而英军与大陆军的战场已移到本杰明家的附近。经过一夜的治疗，加布里耶尔的情况变好，而本杰明亦到战场搜索伤者，带回家医治。
可是，当英军在那场战役打败大陆军后，塔文顿上校来到本杰明的家时，发现加布里耶尔的军函，并带走他，以间谍罪名处死，本杰明的二儿子汤玛斯因为一时情急与英军冲撞，希望救出哥哥，但他却被塔文顿枪杀。
失去二儿子后，本杰明与另外两名儿子到附近的森林，埋伏带走加布里耶尔的英军小队，希望救回他。成功后，他带着一家到小姨子的家暂住，但加布里耶尔坚持回到国民军服役，为了儿子，本杰明也跟着加入国民军……
