David Cameron questioned the future of senior News International executives today as he sought to get a grip on the hacking scandal that has claimed the News of the World, exposed police failings and raised questions of his own judgement. In a hastily-arranged news conference at Downing Street, Mr Cameron said News International, which publishes The Times, had more to do to explain itself. He said Rebekah Brooks, chief executive of News International, should no longer be in her job, a marked toughening of his stance towards someone with whom is a friend. “It has been reported that she offered her resignation over this. And in this situation, I would have taken it.” He also said that James Murdoch, the deputy chief operating officer, chairman and chief executive of News Corporation’s International division, had questions to answer about his role in au Analysis: Cameron playing catch-up

BSkyB’s share price tumbled today as City investors predicted that its planned takeover by News Corporation would be mired in delays and could ultimately fail. Shares in the satellite broadcaster fell almost 5 per cent, losing 39.5p to 772.5p before midday as Jeremy Hunt, the Culture Secretary, made clear that he would take “as long as is needed” to decide whether or not to clear the deal. Shares also dropped in the wake of David Cameron’s call for Rebekah Wade, the chief executive of News International, to quit following the News of the World’s spiralling phone hacking scandal. More than £500 million has been wiped off the value of BSkyB’s market value since this week’s fresh revelations about the tabloid’s alleged hacking targets. News Corporation, the parent company of The Times, is aiming to buy the 60.9 per cent share of BSkyB that it does not already own but has met fierce resistan
