1917年10月21日生干美国南卡罗来纳州的奇罗市，原名约翰·博克斯·吉莱斯皮。吉莱斯皮幼年时就学会了演唱奏长号，12岁转学演奏小号。在摇摆乐大师罗伊.埃尔德里奇的鼓励和影响下，吉莱斯皮在费城加入了弗兰基·菲尔法克斯的乐队。一年后又加盟卡伯·卡罗惟的管弦乐队。
