1947年的十一月八日，蜜妮莱普顿出生于芝加哥，自幼学习声乐、戏剧与舞蹈，后来甚至还一度几乎成为一个歌剧女演员。1961年，十四岁的她在家乡参加了一支女子合唱团“The Gems”，不但获得Chess唱片的合约、推出了好些单曲唱片，还应邀为爱塔詹姆斯（Etta James）等著名的歌手与团体唱和声。为了参加合唱团的巡回演唱，她放弃了进入歌剧院深造的机会。高中毕业之后，她先是在唱片公司兼差担任公关接待员，在合唱团解散后，公司把她留下来，尝试安排她成为一个独唱歌手，甚至还用“安德莉亚戴维斯”（Andrea Davis）的艺名，推出了一张单曲“Lonely Girl”，可惜并不是很成功。
