Matthias Maute

Matthias Maute has achieved an international reputation as one of the finest recorder and baroque flute players of his generation, as a composer and orchestra leader. In 1990, he won First Prize in the soloist category at the prestigious Early Music Competition in Bruges, Belgium. He is esteemed for his artistic direction of Ensemble Caprice, originally formed in Germany and now based in Canada. The ensemble is the winner of a 2009 JUNO award for its CD Gloria! Vivaldi's Angels. Much in demand as a performer, Mr. Maute has appeared at numerous early music festivals around the world, notably those in Boston, Göttingen, Bruges, Berlin, Halle, Kassel, Schwetzingen, Stuttgart, Regensburg, Avignon and Berkeley. In December of 2008, he made his debut at New York City's Lincoln Center. He is currently a professor at McGill University and has taught at the Amherst Early Music Festival, the Bloomington Recorder Academy (Indiana), the San Francisco Early Music Society and the Mozarteum in Salzburg. Mr. Maute is also a member of the baroque ensemble Rebel. Mr. Maute’s compositions hold an important place in the world of contemporary recorder music and are heard frequently in concerts in Europe and North America. His works have been published by Amadeus (Switzerland), Moeck (Germany), Ascolta (The Netherlands) and Carus (Germany). He is the author of two books on recorder improvisation published by Breitkopf & Härtel. Mr. Maute has made twenty recordings on the Analekta, Vanguard Classics, Bella Musica, Dorian, Bridge and Atma Classique labels. He resides in Montreal with his wife, the recorder and traverso player Sophie Larivière, and their two children.
