《猫》自从1981年推出之后，曾在全球150个城市、以14种不同的语言上演，观赏过的观众超过五千万人!一提起《猫》，相信马上联想起剧中最脍炙人口的一首歌曲——Memory，它在《猫》剧中一共出现了三次。
《猫Cat》的作者是安德鲁·莱·韦伯。他生于英国的音乐世家，祖父是优秀的男高音，父亲是英国伦敦音乐学校的校长、知名风琴演奏家，母亲是小提琴家，姨妈是剧院演员，弟弟是著名大提琴手……韦伯从小受到音乐熏陶，7岁开始作曲，姨妈带领他进入剧院，令他从小就领略了舞台的魅力，11岁时韦伯用积木和纸板盖了一个玩具剧院，而他为这个玩具剧院谱写的作品，后来还曾用在音乐剧《爱的观点》中。韦伯16岁获得牛津大学奖学金，19岁进入皇家音乐学院学习管弦乐编曲。此间他认识了词作家Tim Rice，展开多年合作。他们的成名作是《约瑟夫与神奇的梦幻彩衣》，最后一次合作是《艾薇塔》，这部作品也捧红了当时名不见经传的小演员Elaine Paige 。20世纪80年代后，安德鲁·莱·韦伯陆续写出了《猫》《星光列车》《歌剧魅影》《日落大道》《微风轻哨》等作品，其中《猫》是韦伯首次在没有与Tim Rice作的情况下写成的，Elaine Paige和Sarah Brightman都参加了演出，《猫》的首演即获得了成功，后来还成为英国、美国的常青音乐剧之首。
