Feng Jinpeng,A traveler on the expansive journey of music, a young learner in the Composition Department at the Central Conservatory of Music; a “product” of diverse cultures, a guest in the sensory world, a student in the realm of ideas, and the “second creator” of fantasy.
Born into a family in Beijing, where Han, Manchu, Mongolian, and Korean nationalities converge, FENG Jinpeng entered the Middle School Affiliated to China Conservatory of Music in 2013, majoring in Composition from the first year under the guidance of Lecturer ZHU He (Year 1) and Professor LI Lifu. In 2019, he enrolled in the Composition Department at the Central Conservatory of Music, majoring in Composition, where he has been under the supervision of Professor GONG Xiaoting, Associate Professor JI Yu, Professor HU Yinyue, and Professor YAO Chen. In 2024, he was recommended for admission to the graduate program in Composition major at the Central Conservatory of Music, continuing his studies under the guidance of Professor YAO Chen.
FENG Jinpeng often draws inspiration from multiple sources to compose, including Chinese traditional music (especially literati music and Korean nationality music), serious music from various Western eras, world music such as West African, Indian, and Gamelan music, as well as jazz and rock. His works seamlessly blend rational interpretations of musical logic with emotional nuances, sometimes imbuing a piece with explicit non-musical meanings related to his well-conceived fictional worlds.
FENG Jinpeng has engaged in a rich spectrum of creative activities. He composed a children's choral setting for “Border Songs, No. 3”, a poem by LU Lun in the Tang Dynasty, featured in the Children's Choral Works to Classical Poems, Volume II (Central Conservatory of Music Press, edited by Professor ZHANG Shuai). He participated in the creation of a children's choral setting for “Fear not the Want of Armor”, lyrics from Songs Collected in Qin, The Book of Songs, for the teaching support activity “Stars Carrying a Palette” initiated by the Chen Yidan Foundation in Seda County of Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, performed by local elementary students on July 29, 2023. Another composition, the music piece “Rotation”, was presented at the opening ceremony of Beijing Fashion Week SS2024 at the Beijing Friendship Store with young huqin player LIN Baicun and young pipa player SHEN Runmo, garnering praise for its fusion of Korean traditional rhythm form Hwimori Jangdan with fashionable elements.
FENG Jinpeng has received several awards for his compositions. His work “Toccata” (for two pianos) was awarded the Second Prize in the Dieyi Ensemble: Graduate Chinese Piano Duet Original Composition Competition. His percussion quartet “Utopiania Capriccio” earned the Honor Prize at the 13th Yanhuang Cup Percussion Composition Competition at the Central Conservatory of Music. His cello and piano duet “The Song of Chagaan Sar” won the Best Work Award at the 4th “The Golden Oriole Awakening Spring Dawn” International Composition Contest and was performed at the Eastman School of Music in the University of Rochester in the United States, as part of the final round.
Apart from his musical pursuits, FENG Jinpeng has also dedicated himself into diverse social practices. He co-founded BLC Music Studio and serves as its Music Director. He received widespread acclaim for explaining the rhythmic form Jangdan in traditional Korean nationality music during the Korean nationality cultural immersion experience exhibition at Beijing Fashion Week SS2024. In addition, he is rated highly for years of experience in teaching children piano and fundamental music theory.
